POLS Change of Major

Effective Spring 2021

All prospective change of majors must meet with a POLS advisor to discuss their desire to change majors. To change majors to POLS, students must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Completed 6 hours of POLS coursework; at least 3 of those hours must be taken at Texas A&M.
    • Students must have a 2.5 GPA in graded POLS courses; there are no exceptions or appeals for this requirement
    • Both 206 and 207 recommended; other options include POLS 203, 229, 231, 233
    • AP credit or transfer credit will be accepted for 3 of the 6 required hours
  • Overall cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5 at the me of application.
    • Students with at least a 2.0 GPA but below a 2.5 GPA at the me of application may apply to change majors via appeal. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to me to degree and remaining coursework. Appeals are not guaranteed. See “Additional Notes,” below, for information about the appeal process.
  • Has completed no more than 60 credit hours at the me of application. Current number of hours:_________
    • Students with more than 60 hours but less than 90 hours at the me of application may apply to change majors via appeal. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to me to degree and remaining coursework. Appeals are not guaranteed. See “Additional Notes,” below, for information about the appeal process.
  • Has a demonstrated interest in the POLS degree and intends to pursue a POLS degree to completion. “Closet majors” will not be allowed to change to POLS.

Addiotinal Notes:

  • Appeals Process: Students wishing to appeal cumulative GPA requirements, hours requirements, or both should meet with a POLS advisor prior to submitting their appeal. Students whose appeals are submitted prior to open registration will be notified of the status of their appeal within 7 business days. Appeals submitted after the start of open registration will be held until grades post for that academic term; students will be notified of the status of their appeal within 7 business days of grades posting.
  • BS students are strongly encouraged to complete MATH 140, 142, and PHIL 240 before completing 60 credit hours.
  • BA students are strongly encouraged to complete 14 hours of foreign language before completing 60 credit hours.
  • Students whose semester GPA falls below a 2.25 will be placed on “Academic Warning” with the department and will be required to meet with a POLS advisor to remain in good standing.
