Read a recent article by Dr. Perry for the American Political Science Association explaining the impact of DataLab @ TAMU.
Motivation and Program Description:
DataLab is designed to provide access to data science training and prepare students for post-graduate programs.
During the two-day workshop, students gain hands-on experience managing, visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in Stata (statistical software for data science). Under the guidance of a professional instructor (Enrique Pinzon, Associate Director of Econometrics at Stata) and graduate student assistants, participants work through sample datasets, solve practice problems, and develop skills to apply to their own research and future pursuits.
Students are also exposed to current academic research and introduced to academic careers during keynote research talks by TAMU faculty. They meet with other TAMU political science faculty, spend time with TAMU PhD students, and speak with the Political Science graduate director about PhD programs and the application and selection processes.
All undergraduates with an interest in political science research are welcome to apply. It is preferred that students have passed an introductory research methods course (this is POLS 209 at TAMU or an equivalent).
We strongly encourage applications from students from traditionally underrepresented groups in political science. This includes women, LGBTQ+, first-generation students, and students of color. Please note that Texas A&M University is committed to enriching the learning and working environment for all visitors, students, faculty, and staff by promoting a culture that embraces inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability. Diverse perspectives, talents, and identities are vital to accomplishing our mission and living our core values.
