About
The France/TAMU Institute was founded in 2008 with the support of the French Cultural Services and French Embassy and the Office of the Provost at Texas A&M University. The France/TAUM Institute is one of seventeen Centres d’Excellence or Centers of Excellence created by the French Cultural Services with prestigious American partner universities. The purpose of the France/TAMU Institute and the Centers of Excellence is to foster Franco-American cultural and intellectual exchanges in the form of sponsored lectures and colloquia involving French and American scholars, public intellectuals, as well as others. The Centers also encourage and contribute to curricular enhancements and student and teacher exchanges with France.
To date, the France/TAMU has hosted distinguished French historians, philosophers, activists, journalists and writers including France’s famed Nazi hunter and lawyer Serge Klarsfeld, the philosopher Pascal Bruckner, the journalist Annette Levy-Willard, and historians Henry Rousso and Stephane Audouin-Rouzeau, the novelist Laurent Binet, among many others. Also concerned with the Francophone world, the France/TAMU Institute will host a round-table on 25 February 2020 entitled “Rwanda: Democracy after Genocide?”
Housed in the Bush School and the Scowcroft Institute, the France/TAMU Institute works with other entities within the University including the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research, the Department of international Studies, and the Dean of Faculties Office in sponsoring events on campus. The Founding Director of the France/TAMU Institute is University Distinguished Professor and Senior Scowcroft Fellow Richard J. Golsan. The Advisory Board consists of Andrew Natsios, Director of the Scowcroft Institute, Leslie Ruyle, Associate Director of the Scowcroft Institute, Associate Provost and Professor of Spanish Sarah Misemer, and Department Head of International Studies and Associate Professor of German Stefanie Harris.
