In 1990, LTC Boates entered the Army as a Private and was assigned to the Mortar Platoon 3rd Battalion, 73rd Armor, 82nd Airborne Division and deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991.
Following Desert Storm, LTC Boates attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, and graduated from West Point in 1996. His assignments included Company Executive Officer in the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, Platoon Leader in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Battalion S4 and Company Commander in the 101st Airborne Division while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Battalion S3 in 1st Army Division West, Battalion S3, for 1st Battalion (Airborne), 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, Battalion Executive Officer for 1st Battalion (Airborne) 143rd Infantry Regiment while deployed to Afghanistan, Current Operations Officer for the G3/5/7 Army North, Brigade S3 Plans Officer 166th Aviation Brigade, Brigade S3 for the 120th Infantry Brigade, and Deputy Commander 120th Infantry Brigade before being assigned as the Battalion Commander for 1st Battalion 141st Infantry Regiment.
LTC Boates’ military training and education include Airborne School, Air Assault School, Master Fitness Trainer, Aviation Officer Basic, Initial Entry Rotary Wing, Captains Career Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Ranger School, Command and General Staff College, and Department of Defense Support of Civil Authorities.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal 3rd Award, Meritorious Service Medal 4th Award, Army Commendation Medal 3rd Award, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Aviator Wings, Parachutist Badge, and Air assault Badge.
LTC Boates is married to Melanie Duncan from Cuba City, Wisconsin. They have a son, Adrian (22).
