
LTC John “J.P.” Wanja was commissioned by Texas A&M University’s Army ROTC program as a second lieutenant in the Armor branch in August 2002. During his 21 years of service, he has served at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels in the United States and overseas, both at Army and Joint headquarters.
Before being selected to attend Army SSC Fellowship at Texas A&M University’s Scowcroft Institute, LTC Wanja was the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General of Army Futures Command in Austin, TX, where he observed first-hand how the Army delivers the Army of 2030 and designs the Army of 2040. LTC Wanja also served as the Commander of a Basic Combat Training Battalion at Fort Jackson, South Carolina from June 2021 to June 2023. His last three years of service have allowed him to invest in the future of his service branch and our nation. He is proud to have served throughout his career in excellent units that were awarded the Superior Unit Award, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. He has led Army efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Germany, and South Korea. He was privileged to have directly supported DSCA efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
LTC Wanja’s civilian education includes a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, and a master’s degree in adult education from Kansas State University.
