The Center for Nonprofits & Philanthropy (CNP) at the Bush School of Government & Public Service recently conducted a webinar titled Understanding the Economic Impact of Foundations Across the Southwest to discuss robust research on the economic impact of foundations in the Southwest. The states included are Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The webinar, led by CNP Director Dr. Will Brown and Philanthropy Southwest’s (PSW) Executive Vice President, Dr. Mallory Driggers, revealed key findings on the southwest region’s level of giving and economic impact.
The data presented from the region showed a total economic impact of $25 billion, with an average giving per resident of $196 across the region. For every dollar spent by philanthropic organizations, an additional $1.28 is generated by the regional economy. Lastly, the data found that most grants made by foundations in the region remain within the foundation’s respective state. This comprehensive study provides a clear picture of the substantial economic impact of philanthropy in the Southwestern United States.
The data presented in the webinar originated from Dr. Brown’s 2023-2024 graduate capstone class, who worked tirelessly to compile, clean, and analyze data for this report. Additionally, this report was made possible with the generous support of PNC Institutional Asset Management and the continued partnership between Philanthropy Southwest and CNP. This work aims to measure the economic impact of foundation grantmaking in the Southwestern United States and illustrate the significance of the sector’s investments in communities across the region.
