In his essay “Why Does Donald Trump Have So Much Trouble with the Truth? A Brief Update,” Dr. John Schuessler, Co-director of the Albritton Center for Grand Strategy and Associate Professor of International Affairs at the Bush School, revisits his article published with H-Diplo in 2017. In the 2017 article, Schuessler discussed Trump’s troubled relationship with the truth and offered some predictions on how that might impact American foreign policy.
Written in the wake of the Trump presidency, Schuessler’s second essay suggests that while partisan polarization allowed Trump to manipulate the truth with some impunity, it ultimately hindered his attempts to use misinformation to accomplish his administration’s foreign policy goals.
