Stefanie Onder joined the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service as an Assistant Professor in 2025, after 15 years in Washington, DC with the World Bank and the School of International Service at American University. Her research focuses on two pressing challenges for developing countries: environmental degradation and large-scale shocks such as natural disasters and armed conflict. She combines rigorous empirical analysis with practical policy engagement―deepening our understanding of these issues in her academic work and helping governments turn that knowledge into action through her policy work at the World Bank. Her work has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Development Economics and World Development. She was also the lead author of the World Bank’s flagship reportThe Changing Wealth of Nations 2024: Revisiting the Measurement of Comprehensive Wealth. She earned her PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics.
