BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, March 26, 2024 — On Monday, April 8, the U.S. Border Patrol’s Acting Chief Patrol Agent (CPA) for the Big Bend Sector, Matthew J. Roggow, will present “Security: America’s Border in Theory and Practice” as part of the The Other Side of the Border: Ties That Bind and Issues That Divide speaker series. The series, hosted by the Mosbacher Institute’s Borders & Migration Program at the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University, invites practitioners and policymakers working on the border and in Mexico and Latin America to share their expertise and experiences.
The April 8 event will begin with a reception at 5:15 p.m. followed by Chief Roggow speaking at 6 p.m. at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. The reception and lecture are open to the public, but reservations are requested. For registration or additional information, visit the Mosbacher Institute’s website at bush.tamu.edu/mosbacher.
As Acting CPA of the Big Bend Sector, Matthew J. Roggow leads all Border Patrol enforcement operations in the 165,164-square-mile region, including 517 miles of riverfront along the Rio Grande River. The Sector’s border boundary is almost one-quarter of the country’s southwest border. Roggow holds a distinguished career at the U.S. Border Patrol, including serving as Patrol Agent in Charge of the Sector Intelligence Unit in El Centro Sector, where he worked collaboratively with internal and external partners to deploy technology allowing for the covert observation of smuggling activities and increasing the prosecutions of targeted smuggling organizations. As the Assistant Chief in Washington, D.C., he contributed to the first national-level standard operating procedures for intelligence units and oversaw the Northern Border Intelligence Pilot as a member of the Secure Border Initiative Network (SBInet) team.
“The U.S. Border Patrol is at the forefront of U.S. immigration and national security issues today. What we see in the media does not always reflect the realities of border security. We are excited to hear from Chief Roggow about the challenging work of his organization,” said Bush School Professor Aileen Teague, organizer of the speaker series.
