The Center for Nonprofits & Philanthropy (CNP) at the Bush School of Government & Public Service recently conducted a webinar titled Ethical Leadership: The Importance of Conduct and Character in Nonprofit Leaders to discuss what happens when nonprofit and corporate leaders are unethical.
The webinar, led by Dr. Kenny Taylor, CNP’s Director of Outreach and Professional Development, highlighted the increasing need for ethical leadership in the workplace, focusing on the importance of leaders establishing and reinforcing organizational values.
Dr. Taylor provided an overview emphasizing the significance of conduct and character in leaders. Conduct refers to the actions of leaders, while character embodies who leaders are as individuals. Additionally, participants learned about ethics, which offers a system of principles guiding decision-making based on what is deemed right or wrong in a particular situation.
The webinar encouraged participants to contemplate ethical issues that arise in leadership roles and consider how leaders and others should respond in such situations. Lastly, it emphasized the ethical burden that leaders carry as their influence impacts the lives of those they lead. Ethics, therefore, play a central role in effective leadership.
“In the nonprofit space, the attention to and sustaining the highest levels of ethical conduct must be a concern of every nonprofit leader…but the principles of ethical leadership, as they are defined in some literature, have to do with how you respect others, give credence to other’s ideas, place follower’s welfare foremost in plans, manifest honesty and represent the reality as fully as possible.”
