In September 2023, the Scowcroft Institute hosted Dr. Oscar W. Serrate, a former Bolivian ambassador for a productive visit with students, faculty and staff of Texas A&M University.
Throughout his visit, Dr. Serrate was able to visit several graduate and undergraduate classes at the Bush School. Students were able to hear first-hand insights into international relations and diplomacy. Additionally, Dr. Serrate had the opportunity to meet former Bolivian students through his visit with the International Student Organization, creating a space for shared experiences and mentorship.
A special highlight included Dr. Serrate acting as a keynote for a Scowcroft Institute Lunch and Learn. This event allowed faculty, researchers, and staff to engage on critical topics relevant to the Bush School’s mission. Additionally, the Public Service and Administration (PSAA) department had an opportunity to talk with Dr. Serrate about the possibility of establishing a capstone program incorporating collaboration between engineering students in Bolivia and PSAA students from the Bush School. This initiative will offer both groups of students an incredible opportunity to learn about different cultures and engage with sectors different from their own.
During an interview, Dr. Serrate explains how whether it is a small country or a big country, there is always grounds for connection and exchange of experiences. For this reason, this visit was extremely valuable and has created an avenue for continued collaboration and enriching educational experiences.
Dr. Serrate’s visit to the Bush School was a deeply enriching experience to all of those involved. All of this was made possible through an introduction by a former Texas A&M student, Jose Quintana and the generosity of the Scowcroft Institute.
