The Center for Nonprofits & Philanthropy (CNP) at the Bush School of Government & Public Service recently conducted a webinar titled Women’s Philanthropy: 20 Years of Gender and Giving Trends to shed light on the trends, challenges, and opportunities for women’s philanthropy.
The webinar, led by CNP’s Director of Philanthropic Initiatives and Capacity Building, Dr. Angela Seaworth, ACFRE, hosted Jacqueline Ackerman, the Interim Director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI) at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Ackerman shared data on the history of women’s philanthropy and giving habits from the last 20 years. The data offered a comprehensive analysis of how women’s giving patterns have evolved.
The key findings from the research conducted by WPI emphasize the resilience and innovation displayed by women donors. WPI’s data on the last twenty years showed trends that include the recovery of women’s philanthropy after COVID-19, the impactful role of women in sports, health disparities, the influence of AI on philanthropy, and the need for philanthropy to bridge social divides.
Additionally, the data showed that women’s giving patterns differ from men’s. Women are more likely to give and will give more than men; their giving is holistic and collective. One of the main takeaways from the session was the importance of effectively engaging women donors. The webinar offered helpful tips and takeaways, including the need to analyze donor bases, evaluate case statements to appeal to both genders and make giving easy and transparent.
