In this edition of our Alumni Spotlight, we feature Chris Bugbee, a dedicated leader in the nonprofit sector and a proud alumnus of Texas A&M Class of 1998 and the Bush School of Government & Public Service, Class of 2001.
With a career rooted in public service and a passion for community impact, Chris exemplifies the values of service and leadership. His journey into the nonprofit world began in childhood when he was constantly surrounded by various charitable organizations and influenced by his parents’ commitment to helping others. Chris later chose to study at the Bush School because he was inspired by the legacy of President George H.W. Bush and the school’s mission to develop leaders focused on public service. As a member of the school’s third class, he pursued a Master of Public Service Administration (MPSA), focusing on Advanced Public Management. This program equipped him with strategic tools and insights for advancing his career and supporting organizations dedicated to social impact. Additionally, the strong network of former bushies further enriched his experience.
His early public service career deepened his understanding of how nonprofits address complex societal needs in ways that government programs often cannot. In 2004, Chris was appointed Associate Director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at the White House, among other positions in Washington. These positions allowed him to understand the complex intersection of the nonprofit sector and government. He has dedicated his career to empowering nonprofits and fostering positive change in communities across Texas and beyond. In 2019, Chris was appointed by the Governor of Texas to serve as the President and CEO of the OneStar Foundation, which he continues to serve today.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of Chris’s career has been the opportunity to work alongside dedicated individuals across the nonprofit sector. He finds inspiration in the thousands of AmeriCorps members who devote their time to serving communities in Texas. Additionally, initiatives like the Rebuild Texas Fund, which provides Texas communities with resources after a disaster, allow him to support organizations that bring hope during challenging times. Witnessing resilience and compassion in crises reinforces his belief in humanity’s best qualities.
Chris currently serves on the Center for Nonprofits & Philanthropy’s (CNP) Advisory Board as well as America’s Service Commissions and Voices for National Service, which helps keep him connected to national priorities and knowledgeable about current data and trends in the nonprofit sector. When asked how he faces professional challenges, Chris said he draws strength from the knowledge that others trust and believe in him in the roles he serves. He focuses on the people he serves and leans on his team for perspective and support.
Chris’s advice for incoming students, recent graduates, and young professionals in the nonprofit sector is simple: build meaningful relationships now and learn from mentors in your field. Collaboration is essential for making a lasting impact, and investing in one’s network can lead to significant opportunities, especially in the highly collaborative nonprofit sector. Additionally, he notes the importance of being kind and honest and staying true to personal values.
Chris Bugbee’s career in the public and nonprofit sectors is a testament to the power of service and leadership. His commitment to fostering change through collaboration and empowerment inspires current students and future leaders alike. We’re proud to highlight Chris as an outstanding Alum of the Bush School!
