A team from the Institute for Science, Technology and Public Policy (ISTPP) at the Bush School has published an article in a peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Hyunseok Hwang, Dr. Arnold Vedlitz, and Dr. R. Patrick Bixler published their article, “Growing Community Resilience from the Grassroots: Risk Awareness, Confidence in Institutions, and Civic Participation in a Natural Hazards Context,” in Natural Hazards Review.
The research team investigates the factors that impact citizens’ confidence in the public and nonprofit sectors during natural hazards. The authors use empirical models to examine the effects of residents’ awareness of hazard risks on their perceived confidence in institutions responsible for hazard preparedness and response. They also highlight the crucial role of civic participation in positively mediating the effect of hazard risk awareness on confidence levels. The study’s findings contribute to the expanding body of literature on co-production of services aimed at preparing urban residents for the effects of climate change. Dr. Hwang, lead author, points out that their results underscore the significance of community-led initiatives for enhancing community resilience.
Dr. Hwang and Dr. Bixler are both ISTPP Fellows at the Bush School. Dr. Vedlitz serves as Professor and Bob Bullock Chair in Government and Public Policy at the Bush School as well as Director and Distinguished Research Scholar in the ISTPP.
