About the Program
The Certificate in Advanced International Affairs is a strong addition to the resume of anyone building a career in international relations, intelligence, defense policy, military affairs, counterterrorism, diplomacy, international organizations, law enforcement, international business, or international economic development. Courses are taught by nationally and internationally recognized faculty, often alongside a cohort of full-time working professionals who bring real expertise into the classroom. Most certificate students are professionals seeking a standalone credential for career advancement, with the added benefit that the hours earned can transfer toward a Bush School graduate degree later.
Curriculum
The CAIA requires 12 graduate credit hours (four courses) completed with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students choose from a broad pool of graduate international affairs courses, most of which also count toward the Master of International Affairs, and may apply one approved Homeland Security course toward the certificate. You can complete the certificate with a general course of study or tailor it to an area of emphasis (see below).

Choosing an area of emphasis is optional, but it can strengthen your credential: the emphasis is noted on your certificate, signaling focused expertise to employers. Students who select an emphasis complete two core courses and two emphasis-specific courses within their chosen area. You can earn multiple emphases by completing additional coursework.

Where & How You’ll Study
The CAIA is built for flexibility. You can complete it fully online, on campus at College Station or in any combination that fits your schedule and goals. At the Bush School’s Washington, D.C. teaching site, in-person only.
Online
Complete the certificate from anywhere. Online courses run over fifteen-week fall and spring semesters and ten-week summer semesters, with regular online discussion.
College Station
Take courses on campus, typically meeting once a week. On-campus seats can fill quickly, since priority goes to degree-seeking master’s students.
Washington, D.C.
Complete the certificate in person at the Bush School’s DC teaching site by taking any four in-person courses offered there.
