Biography

Stefanie Onder is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. Previously, she worked for 15 years in Washington, DC, with the World Bank and the School of International Service at American University. Her research focuses on two pressing challenges for developing countries: environmental degradation and large-scale shocks such as natural disasters and armed conflict. She combines rigorous empirical analysis with practical policy engagement―using her academic work to deepen our understanding of these issues and her policy work with the World Bank to help governments translate that knowledge into action. Her work has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Development Economics, World Bank Economic Review, and World Development. She was also the lead author of the World Bank’s flagship report The Changing Wealth of Nations 2024: Revisiting the Measurement of Comprehensive Wealth. She earned her PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics.
