Advertising Icon Stan Richards to Receive McLane Leadership Award

The Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics and Public Policy at the Bush School, Texas A&M University, will honor Stan Richards, founder and CEO of The Richards Group, with the 2011 McLane Leadership in Business Award on December 1, 2011. The event will be held at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Stan Richards is the creator of many of America’s most entertaining and successful ad campaigns, for companies such as The Home Depot, Chick-fil-A, Bridgestone, and Motel 6. The McLane Leadership in Business Award program is sponsored by Mr. Drayton McLane, Chairman of The McLane Group. The award recognizes a prominent individual in the field of business for outstanding contributions in the area of business, public service, or community service at the national level.

Following the award presentation and Richards’ remarks, there will be a question and answer session focusing on leadership featuring Richards and Dr. A. Dale Thompson, CEO of Leadership Worth Following LLC.

Richards founded Dallas-based The Richards Group in 1953, after graduating from the Pratt Institute in New York. Over the next twenty years, the company became one of the nation’s premier creative resources. In 1976, it became a full-service advertising agency.

Richards’ work has received awards in virtually every major competition in the world. In 1986, he was honored with an Advertising Age cover story. Also in 1986, Adweek named him Executive of the Year, and he was included in The Wall Street Journal’s “Giants of Our Time.” In 1988, 1990, 1994, and 2002, the firm was named Agency of the Year by Adweek. In 1995, Richards was named an Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. magazine.

In 1997, the American Association of Advertising Agencies honored The Richards Group with its A+ Award, given annually to America’s best agency. In 2007, Graphic Design USA named the firm one of America’s six most influential agencies. In 1999, Richards received the highest honor available to a creative with his election to the Art Directors Hall of Fame, joining such luminaries as Walt Disney, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol.

Richards serves, or has served, on many boards: The Salvation Army, Episcopal School of Dallas, YMCA, Cooper Aerobics Enterprises, Dallas Symphony Association, United Way, the Creative Committee of the AAAA, the Pratt Institute Board of Trustees, and the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation.

The Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics and Public Policy at the Bush School of Government and Public Service was founded in October 2009 to produce policy-oriented research in trade, energy, and governance. This event is free and open to public, but an RSVP is required:
