Neil Bush channeled his father—George H. W. Bush—as he told students at the Bush School of Government and Public Service about the value of public service. Bush has been involved in nonprofit and philanthropic work over the course of his business career.

Bush engaged with Bush School students and faculty prior to his lecture about his family, mom and dad, kids, and the Bush family legacy. Bush is the Chairman of the Points of Light Board of Directors; Chair of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation along with his wife Maria; and Chair of the Bush China U.S. Relations Foundation. Bush also was a founding director, along with the future Pope Benedict XVI, of the Foundation for Interreligious and Intercultural Research and Dialogue.

Dr. Will Brown, Director of the Center for Nonprofits and Philanthropy and Professor at the Bush School, said Neil Bush’s visit was inspiring to students.

“He provided a warm and welcoming reflection on his family and their commitment to service. It was just neat to be able to see and have a very personal conversation with Neil and learn about the way he thinks about service and his family’s legacy of service,” Brown said.

Georgia Gandy Osburn, a second-year Public Service and Administration student focusing on public management and pursuing a Certificate in Nonprofit Management also commented on the event.

“Neil Bush spent time getting to know the students before the event even started! He was incredibly encouraging about our academic ambitions and career goals. During his presentation, he spoke of the Bush family in a way that highlighted their legacy of service by introducing us to their family dynamics. We learned that all it takes is a few ordinary people working hard to improve the world around them to generate real change,” Osburn said.

Neil Bush has been a frequent visitor to the Bush School, participating in the Tenth Annual Reading Discovery Program and interacting with students.

“It was awesome to visit with some of the outstanding Bush School students, all future leaders dedicated to helping others. My father has inspired millions to become points of light and the Bush School is doing great work in preparing students to play important roles in service to others,” Neil Bush said.
