For years, Dr. Kirby Goidel has been a staple of on-air local media in the Bryan/College Station area. Completely a volunteer effort, he’s motivated by one thing: increasing the visibility of the Department of Political Science to a wider audience.
In just the past academic year, Dr. Goidel has appeared on KBTX local news a half-dozen times, offering political context to viewers across the Brazos Valley on some of the year’s most closely watched developments. Across multiple “Focus at Four” segments, Goidel broke down the expiration of federal health subsidies, a Texas special election that flipped a Republican district, the prospect of a Department of Homeland Security shutdown, shifting dynamics in the Texas Senate race following a high-profile endorsement, and an unusual public clash between national political and religious leaders.
The appearances reflect a steady rhythm of public-facing analysis that has positioned Goidel as a bridge between academic research and local news audiences. In each segment, he translated fast-moving political events into accessible explanations, helping viewers understand not just what was happening, but why it mattered in a broader political context. Dr. Goidel relishes the fast-paced nature: “news is news, so the interviews are always unexpected. At best, you get 24 hours of notice, but sometimes it’s as little as an hour.” KBTX in particular has repeatedly turned to him for perspective during periods of political uncertainty, especially when national developments carry direct implications for Texas politics and governance.
For the Texas A&M Department of Political Science, Goidel’s media presence underscores a broader commitment to public engagement and community-facing scholarship. Department Head Guy Whitten said such outreach is an essential part of the department’s role in public life. “Our faculty are not only scholars, but also interpreters of complex political realities for the communities we serve,” Whitten said. “Dr. Goidel’s regular contributions to KBTX show how academic expertise can inform public understanding in real time.”
