Director's Welcome

Larry Napper Welcome to the online home of the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs! From our real-world home at Texas A&M University's Bush School of Government and Public Service, we are at the forefront of policy-oriented international relations research and education in Texas and the Southwest. Our home at one of the state's flagship universities puts us in place to be a leader in the state's burgeoning international affairs and national security community. We hope that you will explore our site and see how we are pursuing this mission daily. Of course, you are always welcome to visit us in person and to attend the events and presentations we offer throughout the year.

Our Institute was founded in 2007 and named in honor of Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft, the only person ever to serve as national security advisor to the president under two different administrations. In his service as a United States Air Force officer, and as national security advisor to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, Scowcroft guided policymaking with unsurpassed wisdom, thoughtfulness, and intellectual rigor. He continues to act as a respected advocate for a reasoned and pragmatic American engagement with the world. We are proud to bear his name and to perpetuate his legacy of thoughtfulness in research and work in the international affairs arena.

The Scowcroft Institute brings together a number of different existing and new programs under one roof at the Bush School of Government and Public Service. The International Affairs Seminar series, the Lenore and Francis Humphries International Speakers series, and the William and Dianne Moss-Scowcroft Lecture bring to the campus of Texas A&M leading scholars and practitioners of international affairs and foreign policy for public lectures and discussions of current global issues. Our events page contains schedules for upcoming lectures -- consider yourself invited to attend! The Ansary Foreign Policy conference series and the Lone Star National Security Forum bring together leading scholars to discuss and debate various topics of interest to both the academic and policymaking communities. Through Korea and O'Donnell Grant programs, we facilitate research by outside scholars at the George Bush Presidential Library, while our Capstone Support and Scowcroft Faculty Research Grant programs support international affairs research by Texas A&M faculty and students. In the fall of 2009, the new Scowcroft Institute Army Fellowship program was inaugurated. This program will bring two U.S. Army officers to the Institute for professional education and research.

Please bookmark our events page and check in regularly for updates on our lecture series and other events. For your convenience, you may sign up through our homepage to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our electronic mailing list for regular updates about happenings at the Institute. I encourage scholars interested in our grant programs to explore our Grants Overview page for further information about applying for our grants.

I hope to see you at future events and to hear from you with your suggestions and questions about our Institute. We look forward to your participation as we "bring the world to Aggieland and Aggieland to the world."

Sincerely,
Ambassador (Ret.)
Larry Napper
