Description
This workshop is designed to help leaders of nonprofit organizations better understand, articulate and bring to life the purpose of their organizations.
Nonprofit organizations are designed to make a difference in the world. They are firmly rooted in purpose. Yet, even the most purpose driven nonprofits often struggle to articulate what they do in a way that inspires all stakeholders to get involved and get it done. With a keen understanding and a crystal clear articulation of the organization's purpose, employees and volunteers are more engaged, decision-making is easier and energy can be channeled in a more construction fashion.
Who should attend: Nonprofit executives, senior management and board members. We recommend that at least two members of your organization attend this workshop together so you can capitalize on the benefits of the training.

Agenda
The day will kick-off with a presentation that includes a variety of case studies from firsthand work helping some of America's most successful organizations discover and bring to life the authentic purpose at the heart of the organization. 5/20/2008
10:00 — 10:15 am - Break(15 minutes)
10:15 — 10:45 am - Articulating your Purpose. (30 minutes)
A handful of words shouldn't be that difficult to write, right? We will look at the common problems that arise when it comes time to put pen to paper and articulate your organizational Purpose. Participants will be shown what to leave out, what to put in and how to manage input from multiple decision-makers.
10:45 — 12:00 pm - Positioning Beyond Defeat. (1 hour)
The Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu argued that if you know your opponent, know yourself and know the terrain, you can position yourself beyond defeat. Non-profit organizations stand a much better chance of fulfilling their Purpose when they've done the hard work of identifying the motivations of the people they are trying to reach and understanding the real obstacles that stand in the way of success. This interactive section will showcase the surprising positioning strategies developed to help some of America's most notable non-profits succeed in their work.
12:00 — 1:00 pm - Lunch (Provided)
1:00 — 2:30 pm - Discovering & Articulating Your Purpose - Part 1
Participants will be led through a series of exercises designed to help articulate the purpose and values within their own organizations.
2:30 — 2:45 - Break
2:45 — 4:00 pm - Discovering & Articulating Your Purpose - Part 2
By the end of the day, participants will be better able to communicate their Purpose, rally the troops and make a difference in the world.

Haley Rushing
Sr. Vice President, Chief Planning Officer, GSD&M
Founder, Chief Purposologist, Purpose Institute
Although she works for GSD&M, one of the top 25 ad agencies in the country, Haley Rushing doesn't like to think of herself as being in the ad business. While her work may result in great advertising, her passion lies in helping organizations discover their Core Purpose, beyond making money, and uncovering the Core Values that create and define the culture of the organization.
Her clients have included some of America's most respected corporations— Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, Charles Schwab and Whole Foods Market; some of the most powerful organizations— AARP and the United States Air Force; and some of America's most notable non-profits— the American Red Cross, American Legacy Foundation, and the Clinton Global Initiative. She also led the Purpose based branding effort for Texas A&M.
When you meet her, she's likely to begin the conversation by asking, "What difference do you really make? Would anyone miss you if you weren't here?" Don't take it personally. As Chief Purposologist, Haley leads a team of people who act as organizational therapists, anthropologists and historians. Every Purpose project involves a thorough exploration of the passions, underlying motivations, and strengths of the organization as well as a thorough examination of the impact of the organization in the lives of the people it comes in contact with.
She has recently founded the Purpose Institute, an organization dedicated exclusively to helping clients discover and articulate their purpose and values in the world.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Haley holds a B.A. in cultural anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and studied alternative dispute resolution at The Wharton School of Business. She currently resides in Austin, TX as the Chief Purposologist at the Purpose Institute, an independent firm affiliated with GSD&M Idea City.
