Barbara Bush was beloved by students at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M. Her frequent interactions with students were often the subject of conversations at the School. To commemorate her legacy and her devotion to service, a group of students at the School raised nearly $2,800 that will go toward education and literacy, two causes the former First Lady championed.

“Mrs. Bush was a stunning women and remarkable public servant,” said Lizzy Leary, one student who had the opportunity to meet and talk with Mrs. Bush. “I am grateful for the opportunities that I had seeing her on our campus and am even more grateful for having the chance to interact with her on one of these occasions. Mrs. Bush complimenting my outfit will forever be one of my greatest honors. She brought a light into this world, and her impact on Bush School students is immeasurable.”

The students sold t-shirts to raise money for the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation and the Barbara Pierce Bush Scholarship Fund at the Bush School. After it is fully funded, the scholarship will be awarded to incoming Bush School students. The money raised will be split equally between the two causes.

Rebecca Leppert, a second-year student at the Bush School, led the fundraising effort. “First Lady Barbara Bush was an inspiration for all Americans. A group of us here at the School want to help support those organizations Mrs. Bush cared deeply about, so we have created a commemorative t-shirt in her honor.”

Because of Mrs. Bush’s close involvement with the Bush School student body, students involved in the fundraiser felt a sense of commitment to carry on her legacy. Mrs. Bush had a direct impact on the lives of many students, at the Bush School and elsewhere. With her passing, Bush School students wanted to ensure the foundation she laid still had the opportunity to positively affect students.

“I’m so proud of these students and all they do to make the world a better place,” said Dean Mark Welsh. “Their dedication to public service is on display every day, and this is one of those instances. I know how much Mrs. Bush meant to the students, and it seems fitting they remember her in this way.”

The t-shirt features Mrs. Bush’s iconic pearls and a quote from her:  “Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people—your family, friends, coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way.”
