Dr. Jonathan Gruber

Dr. Jonathan Gruber, a prominent health economist who served as a technical consultant to the Obama administration and worked with both the administration and Congress to help craft the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will speak on “The Affordable Care Act: Will It Survive and What Comes Next?” The talk is part of the Mosbacher Conversations in Public Policy Series sponsored by the Mosbacher Institute at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. After his prepared remarks, Dr. Laura Dague, Bush School assistant professor and Health Policy Research Program Scholar with the Texas A&M School of Public Health, will engage Dr. Gruber in an on-stage conversation.

The program, which is open to the public and cosponsored by the Department of Economics at Texas A&M University, will be held at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow the event.

Upon assuming office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing agencies to minimize “the economic burden” of the Affordable Care Act until it is repealed. This decision set in motion a current, ongoing debate between public policy experts and government officials, thus making the future of the Affordable Care Act uncertain. As policy makers continue to work toward a solution, Dr. Gruber will share his thoughts on the matter at this upcoming event.

Dr. Gruber is the Ford Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1992. He is also the Director of the Health Care Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research and President of the American Society of Health Economists. He has published more than 160 research articles, has edited six research volumes, and is the author of Public Finance and Public Policy, a popular textbook, and Health Care Reform, a graphic novel.
