Noted Eastern Europe Expert to Speak on Russian Politics, Motivations

Anne ApplebaumNoted journalist and award-winning author Anne Applebaum will address issues on Russian politics and the motivations behind them at 6 p.m. on Monday (September 28) at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center on the Texas A&M University campus.

Applebaum’s presentation, “Does Putin Have a Grand Strategy?” is part of the Lenore and Francis Humphrys International Speakers Program, co-sponsored by the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service and the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research, both at Texas A&M.

An American and Polish journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Applebaum has been an editor at The Economist and a member of the editorial board of The Washington Post. From 1988-1991, Applebaum covered the collapse of communism as the Warsaw correspondent of The Economist magazine and has written extensively about communism and the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe. Her books include: Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956; and Gulag: A History, which won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 2004. Both have been translated into several languages.

Currently a columnist for The Washington Post and Slate, Applebaum directs the Transitions Forum at the Legatum Institute in London and is an adjunct fellow of the Center for European Policy Analysis. She is married to Poland’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski.
