Brown Bag Seminar Features Dr. Nancy Dickey and Ms. Liz Dickey

January 30, 2015

Nancy Dickey and Elizabeth Dickey

On January 26, Dr. Nancy Dickey and her daughter Liz conducted a Conversation in Leadership seminar as part of the Bush School’s Brown Bag Speaker Series. The program was sponsored by the School’s Public Service Leadership Program.

Nancy W. Dickey currently serves as a professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Medical Humanities in the College of Medicine, and also in the the Department of Health Policy and Management in the School of Public Health, Texas A&M Health Science Center.  Dickey was President of the A&M Health Science Center for ten years, and was the first woman elected to head the American Medical Association.

Liz Dickey is the Executive Director of Health for All (HFA) a free clinic in Bryan-College Station for the uninsured who do not access to employer funded health insurance, cannot afford their portion of the insurance, and/or are financially disqualified from government health care programs.

The mother-daughter duo—a first for this series—discussed their experiences in the nonprofit sector, emphasizing the challenges of leadership in nonprofit organizations, especially for women. They focused on the need to remain true to your organization’s vision and mission, and discussed how to keep employees motivated. Each had specific suggestions about finding and working with a mentor, and celebrating successes.
