Emerging Leaders Program Set for May 13-15, 2014

Emerging Leaders

The shortage of talented and effective leaders in the rapidly expanding nonprofit sector is a growing concern among practitioners as well as academic researchers.  The Bush School’s Emerging Leaders Program is helping to meet that need with an annual conference designed for professionals working in the nonprofit sector, education, or state and local government who want to improve their leadership skills. Attendees include current graduate students planning a career in the nonprofit or public sector as well as individuals transitioning into the nonprofit field who want to develop an individualized leadership development plan.

The 2014 session will be held May 13-15 at the Bush School on the Texas A&M University campus. Dr. Will Brown, who directs the Bush School’s Certificate in Nonprofit Management program, leads the three-day in-residence program. Students participate in leadership self-assessment, professional development planning, and dynamic workshops. They gain a better understanding of their leadership skills and the challenges of nonprofit management, and receive support to improve their leadership capabilities.

“In the five years since this program began, we’ve seen students gain management skills, identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and develop a personal plan to improve their leadership skills. They expand their professional network, meeting colleagues they can call on later for advice and counsel,” said Brown. He also noted that the program includes three months of follow-up activities after the in-residence meeting.

Participants will take part in more than twenty hours of workshops and training offered by Bush School faculty and staff. Most meals are provided during the conference, and special rates are available at local hotels.

Applications are available now and should be submitted by Monday, April 14, at 5:00 p.m.  Registration forms, a complete agenda, and information on all sessions can be found at
