Once again, the Bush School’s Nonprofit Management Forum has garnered praise from participating staff, board members, volunteers, and students. This year’s event on April 4 at the Annenberg Conference Center brought together academic researchers, consultants, industry professionals, and aspiring leaders in a program geared toward improving the effectiveness of nonprofits.

The end of the spring semester saw Bush School students recognized for their extra efforts in leadership and writing development.  On April 22, Dean Crocker, along with Professors Joe Cerami, Larry Napper, and Bill West; lecturer Sally Dee Wade; and leadership and writing portfolio program assistants, Holly Kasperbauer and Kara Socol, presented awards for the Writing Portfolio Project and the Dean’s Certificate in Leadership.

Thanks to some caring and energetic Bush School students, a young man with a brain tumor will be able to visit Rome and learn more about his faith—the wish he submitted to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition.

Associate professor, Dr. Laurie E. Paarlberg, came to the Bush School in the fall of 2013 from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.  In 2003, she earned a PhD in public affairs at Indiana University at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.  She also completed a minor in organizational theory and strategic management at Indiana’s Kelley School of Business.

The Bush School softball team – the Bushwhackers - came away victorious this weekend against the LBJ School in Austin, bringing home bragging rights and the “Dillo” trophy after a two-year absence.  Both the students and alumni had close matchups that resulted in hitting and pitching duels for both games.

Lisa Brown has been appointed director of the Office of Extended Education (OEE) for the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.  Brown has been serving as interim director since September 2013, and previously, beginning in 2007, served as assistant director.

Dr. Arnie Vedlitz, executive associate dean of the Bush School and director of the Institute for Science, Technology and Public Policy, will serve as co-director of the Community Outreach Engagement Core (COEC) for the Center for Translational Environmental Health Research (CTEHR) recently announced by Texas A&M University.

Assistant Professor Erin A. Snider joined the Bush School’s Master’s Program in International Affairs in the fall of 2013.  She holds a PhD in politics and international studies from Trinity College, Cambridge, and focuses her research on democracy aid and the political economy of the Middle East, particularly Egypt.

Twenty-five years ago in June, then President George H. W. Bush granted the 500th wish of a Make-A-Wish child to meet him at the White House.  Today, students at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University are raising $6,500 to grant the wish of a child in the College Station or Houston area to honor President Bush.

The idea that complex foreign policy requires improved coordination among defense, diplomacy, and development—known as the 3D concept—was the topic of the February 28 meeting of Texas A&M’s Alexander Hamilton Society, hosted by the Bush School.  The 3D concept was initially highlighted by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton.
