Twenty-five years ago in June, then President George H. W. Bush granted the 500th wish of a Make-A-Wish child to meet him at the White House.  Today, students at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University are raising $6,500 to grant the wish of a child in the College Station or Houston area to honor President Bush.

The idea that complex foreign policy requires improved coordination among defense, diplomacy, and development—known as the 3D concept—was the topic of the February 28 meeting of Texas A&M’s Alexander Hamilton Society, hosted by the Bush School.  The 3D concept was initially highlighted by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton.

The shortage of talented and effective leaders in the rapidly expanding nonprofit sector is a growing concern among practitioners as well as academic researchers.  The Bush School’s Emerging Leaders Program is helping to meet that need with an annual conference designed for professionals working in the nonprofit sector, education, or state and local government who want to improve their leadership skills.

Two leading experts on the federal debt crisis spoke at the Bush School at the end of January. Alan K. Simpson, former US senator from Wyoming, and Erskine B. Bowles, White House chief of staff under President Bill Clinton, gave the ConocoPhillips White House Lecture, one of a series hosted by the Bush School’s Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics, and Public Policy.

Dr. Laura Dague, an assistant professor in the MPSA program, earned a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin, where she was associated with the Population Health Institute and the Institute for Research on Poverty.  Her doctoral fields of study were public economics and labor economics.

Dr. Reyko Huang is an assistant professor of international affairs at the Bush School. Her research focuses on civil wars, rebel group dynamics, state-building, democratization, and foreign interventions in conflict.


January 15, 2014

Dean Ryan Crocker has announced that Jessica McCann has joined the Bush School as senior development officer. Ms. McCann received her bachelor’s degree in communication in 2007 from Texas A&M and is currently working toward a master’s in educational human resources development.  She joined the A&M Foundation in 2009 and has been the director of development for the Mays School.

The Scowcroft Institute and the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research will host a public screening of Michaël Prazan’s documentary, The Trial of Adolf Eichmann, on January 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Annenberg Conference Center.  The film screening precedes a conference entitled “Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem: 50 Years On,” which commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Hannah Arendt’s book, Eichmann in Jerusalem.

The event is part of the ConocoPhillips White House Lecture Series presented by the Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics, and Public Policy. It will be held at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center at 5:30 p.m.
