Jack Calvin, a member of the Texas A&M class of 1960 and a long-time supporter of the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Calvin and his wife, Dr. Nora Janjan ’06, established multiple endowed chairs, scholarships, and other endowments, helping Texas A&M and the Bush School promote important research, provide funding for students, and provide a world-class education for the next generation of leaders.

Kent Portney, Jeryl Mumpower, and Arnold Vedlitz received a National Science Foundation RAPID grant to study perceptions of risk among the American public regarding domestic terrorism, with a particular focus on so-called “lone-wolf” terrorist attacks—acts committed by individuals or a small number of people who are self-radicalized and without direct links to a larger group.

Several students from the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, recently returned from a research trip to Kuwait City that included meetings with several prominent Kuwaiti officials and an appearance on a national Kuwaiti television show. The trip was part of a semester-long capstone research project guided by Dr. Robert Holzweiss, deputy director of the George Bush Library.

The Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, has entered the top 20 public affairs programs among public institutions, according to the latest US News & World Report rankings released today.  In less than two decades, the Bush School, named after President George H.W. Bush, has risen in the rankings to 19th among public schools, 31st overall.

Bush School students Miguel Eusse, Chloe Verschuren, and Danelle Hopkins were among the select number of students invited to participate in the 2016 European Student Conference (ESC) at Yale University February 5-6, 2016. The students were chosen from a pool of qualified candidates worldwide and represented the Bush School in three policy workshops: “Economy and Innovation,” “Transatlantic Relations,” and “Immigration and Integration.”

While others might have used their winter break to relax and take time off, students and faculty from the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, were busy engaging with scholars, activists, and diplomats in Cairo, Egypt. The trip was a part of a study abroad course, Issues in Modern Egyptian Politics, which focused on the politics and history of modern Egypt and was taught by Dr. Erin Snider, assistant professor in the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School.

On March 8, 2016, the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service will host Colonel (R) Andrew Budd, head of the Defense Capabilities Section, Defense Policy Directorate, NATO. Colonel Budd will give a talk entitled “NATO’s View of Europe.” The event will take place from 12:20 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. at the George Bush Presidential Library.
