Time Management

March 23, 2016

Bush School students

Throughout my education, I have been an average person when it comes to deadlines. I do my assignments on time and study for exams, but I’m never especially early and never at the last minute. This system worked well for me. But somehow, in the five years of working since undergrad graduation and beginning graduate school, I lost that time management ability. In the interim, work was for work hours, and after that, I was free for my own pursuits.

In my first semester, I did really well with completing my reading and writing assignments on time, but I rarely looked too far ahead. This all caught up to me leading into the fall’s final two weeks. I suddenly realized I had multiple large assignments and exams coming up. I hadn’t checked the spacing of my assignments, and in taking them one at a time, I hadn’t realized multiple professors had put papers or major point exams at the end! I ended up having to complete a week’s worth of papers through a long night, finishing at 7 AM before the morning deadlines. Although I was able to make As in those subjects, I missed out on a lot of the end-of-year social events, all because I didn’t have better awareness!

I learned then to create a spreadsheet at the start of each semester that recorded every assignment and exam from each class. Having this all in one place helped me manage my time more efficiently. I couldn’t have lived without that Excel!
