Students giving back: Read by 3rd

January 05, 2016

This year our student-led Public Service Organization (PSO) started a new partnership with Read by 3rd, a program promoting family literacy to low-income families in Bryan. The organization teaches parents how to support reading activities at home; the goal is to have children read at grade level by the end of third grade.

One Saturday morning a month, parents join workshops at local elementary schools and learn how to read and talk with their children and how to assist in their development. In order to help the program be successful, our PSO provides childcare to increase family participation. Our volunteers plan engaging, fun, educational, and age-appropriate activities for each month and supervise the children. And as the program continues to grow, our PSO will continue to refine our activities and help this important program flourish.
