Fall Idealist and AmeriCorps Events

December 08, 2014

Miami CityYear

Each fall I head to cities all across the nation and meet prospects. It’s fun, sure, but I promise that it sounds more exciting than it is, as I rarely have time to venture away from the airport, hotel, and event sites. But despite that, the people I meet and the opportunities afforded us as recruiters are truly special. In fact, I’ve had a great time this fall at the Idealist.org fairs and AmeriCorps events.

Each year we choose to attend Idealist.org fairs in some of the more interactive cities that have shown interest. For fall 2014, we attended events in twelve cities across the nation to spread the word about our programs. But what’s exciting is that we went a step further in three of those cities, sharing our table with City Year staff in order to double promote our graduate partnership. In New Orleans, Miami, and Columbus, we met prospects who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those around them. Some plan to serve in school districts for a year, where they will earn up to 5K in educational funds, while others are ready for graduate school to build their service skills. In Miami, the CityYear rep, Nicholas, got a photo shot of our table with the University of Miami mascot and a prospect. We had a great time and decided we should expand this to every city where City Year has an office. We’ll see if we can make that happen for fall 2015.

We are also partnering with the Clinton School of Public Service for the second year. The Bush and Clinton Schools offered sessions with current AmeriCorps service members and alumni in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Dallas. At all of these sites we met dedicated young adults who are finding needs and writing grants, as well as serve community agencies and nonprofits who coordinate development and infrastructure/building projects, reading groups, conservation efforts, and more. We love these boots-on-the-ground interactions members bring to the classroom and want to reward them with a top-rate education and opportunities. In fact, the Bush School guarantees a minimum $5,000 scholarship and waives the application fee for any AmeriCorps (to include City Year, etc.), Teach for America, and Peace Corps members.
