Dr. Emily A. Sellars joined the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School this fall as an assistant professor. Prior to coming to the Bush School, she was a postdoctoral scholar in political economy at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Dr. Sellars received a joint PhD in political science and agricultural and applied economics from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. She also holds an MA in political science from the University of Wisconsin and an AB in economics magna cum laude from Cornell University, where she was a College Scholar.

Dr. Sellars’ research interests are at the intersection of comparative politics and development economics. Her current research projects include work on the political economy of emigration and population, the political economy of land tenure and institutions, and the historical determinants of contemporary development. Dr. Sellars has extensive field and professional experience in Mexico and Central America. She has received a number of awards and fellowships, including the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, and the University of Wisconsin’s University Fellowship. Her work has been presented at prominent organizations and conferences, including the American Political Science Association Annual Conference, the International Political Economy Society Annual Conference, and the International Conference on Migration and Development.
