Homeland Security (HLS Track)

Homeland security remains a critical and vital area of public service. In this track, you will explore the theoretical underpinnings and the history of the homeland security field. You will gain insights from experts in the field and from your colleagues. You will then move beyond the foundations to the strategies, procedures, and policies that drive our nation’s homeland security efforts. You will also

  • examine the laws, policies, and regulations that define homeland security;
  • identify and describe the foreign and domestic terrorist threats to the homeland;
  • analyze the private sector responsibilities in the homeland security enterprise;
  • study and analyze the private sector efforts at business continuity;
  • examine and understand the 16 Critical Infrastructure Sectors and how they are protected;
  • synthesize and analyze the border security policy and operations inherent to the homeland security mission;
  • synthesize and analyze the maritime security policy and operations inherent to the homeland security mission; and
  • propose viable solutions to homeland security challenges in various areas, such as cybersecurity, domestic and international terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, bioterrorism, and critical infrastructure protection.

Nonprofit Management (NP) Track

Nonprofit management is a rewarding field that is experiencing continued growth. Nonprofit management affords professionals the opportunity to positively impact the world around them and leave a lasting contribution to individuals, society, and world. In the nonprofit track, along with gaining an understanding of the historical and theoretical perspectives on the sector and discovering the role and function of nonprofits in society today, you will also develop the advanced expertise and skills to

  • compare and apply management, leadership, and governance principles to lead organizational activities;
  • integrate legal, economic, and political perspectives in the management of nonprofits;
  • develop human resource systems that attend to human capital concerns with paid employees and unpaid volunteers;
  • employ inter-organizational principles to support collaborative relationships; and
  • utilize evaluation principles to create programs that produce public benefits.

Public Management (PM) Track

The public management track provides opportunities for graduate education in public management. The public management track focuses on the capabilities required for effective and ethical leadership in the public and nonprofit sectors. These include knowledge and skills pertaining to the internal operation of public-service organizations and to the relationship between those organizations and their environments.
